Photo Retouch & Light Fix
Lighter face shadows, gently smoothed skin and bright studio light.
Make a photo taken at home look cleaner: lighter shadows, gently smoothed skin and brighter, even light.
A cleaner photo without a studio
Photos taken at home for forms, profiles or ID cards often have a dark shadow on one side of the face, uneven light from a window and a slightly dull look. This tool gives such a photo a quick studio-style finish with three simple sliders, so it looks brighter and cleaner before you resize it for a form or print it as a passport photo.
Even out shadows
The first slider lifts darker areas towards the brightness around them. It looks at the light across the whole picture, finds the parts that are much darker than the bright parts, and brightens them gently while keeping the colours. A face lit from one side looks more even. Very dark photos still need better light; the tool cannot bring back detail that the camera did not capture.
Smooth skin (light)
The second slider softens small texture in areas where neighbouring pixels are already similar, such as skin, plain walls and sky. Edges with strong contrast, such as eyes, eyebrows, hair and the outline of the face, are left sharp. Keep it low for official photos, because forms want a natural look. The smoothing is applied to the whole picture, not only to the face.
Studio brightness
The third slider stretches the tones so the darkest part is truly dark and the brightest part truly bright, lightens the middle tones a little and adds a touch of colour. This removes the grey, flat look of many phone photos taken indoors.
How to get good results
Start with the default values, look at the 'After' preview and adjust. Put any slider at 0 to switch that part off. Save as JPG for forms and sharing, or PNG if you will edit the photo further. The result keeps the size of your photo, up to about 3200 pixels on the long side.
What it does not do
It does not change the shape of the face, remove spectacles or replace the background. To change the background use the Remove Background tool, and to remove a small mark use the Spot and Date Eraser.
An example
A job seeker takes a selfie near a window for an online application. One side of his face is dark and the photo looks grey. He sets shadows to 60, skin smoothing to 20 and studio brightness to 50. The face now looks evenly lit and natural, and he then uses the Exam Photo tool to bring it to the size and KB the form asks for.
