Find out what changed between two versions of a PDF

When someone sends you a new version of a rent agreement, a quotation, a contract, a syllabus or a policy, it is hard to spot what is different by reading both side by side. This tool compares an old PDF with a new one and shows exactly what was added, removed or changed, with page numbers, so you do not miss a changed amount, date or condition.

Text, line by line

In this mode the tool reads the text of both PDFs line by line and lines them up with each other. The result is a report PDF. Each place with a difference shows the old text on the left and the new text on the right. Removed words are marked in red and crossed out; added words are marked in green. Lines that changed only a little, such as an amount from 12000 to 13500, have only the changed words marked, so the difference stands out. The report starts with a summary of pages and differences.

Look of the pages

Scanned PDFs have no text to read, and sometimes the change is in a picture, a stamp or the layout. In this mode every page of both PDFs is drawn side by side and the areas that look different are shaded red. The result is a PDF with one sheet per page. This works for scans too, but if the new version has an extra line near the top, everything below it moves and much of the page can be marked, so use the text mode when the PDF has real text.

Order of the files

Add the old PDF first and the new PDF second. If you added them the other way round, use the arrows in the file list to swap them, because the report calls the first file 'old' and the second 'new'.

What it cannot see

The text mode does not compare fonts, colours, pictures or formatting, only the words. The look mode compares only what is visible, not hidden text. Neither replaces careful reading of an important legal document, but both show you quickly where to look.

An example

A tenant receives a renewed rent agreement. The text comparison shows two places that changed: the rent went from 12000 to 13500 rupees, and a line about the notice period was replaced by a line saying electricity is paid by the tenant. He can ask about these before signing.

Private by design

Everything happens inside your own browser. Your files and the details you type are never uploaded to a server, and nothing is kept after you close the page. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit. For contracts, bank papers and personal photos this matters more than anything else.
