Header & footer

Add a title, name, date or page number at the top and bottom of PDF pages.

Put a title, your name, a date or "Page 1 of 10" at the top and bottom of PDF pages. Works with Hindi and every other language.

What this tool does

A header is a short line of text at the top of every page and a footer is the same at the bottom. They tell a reader what the document is, who it belongs to and where they are in it, even when a single page is printed or forwarded on its own. This tool writes your header and footer onto the pages of an existing PDF, so you do not need the original Word file or any desktop software.

Text that fills itself in

You can type plain words, such as a company name or "Confidential", and you can add four small codes that change on every page. {page} becomes the page number, {total} becomes the number of pages, {date} becomes today's date as day, month and year, and {file} becomes the name of your PDF without the .pdf ending. A footer of "{file} · Page {page} of {total}" therefore reads "Report · Page 3 of 12" on the third page of a twelve-page file called Report.

Every language prints correctly

Many PDF tools can only add English letters to a page because the standard PDF fonts contain nothing else. PDFPixo draws your header and footer as a sharp, high-resolution picture of the text instead, using the fonts on your own device. Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Urdu, Arabic, Chinese and every other script come out exactly as you typed them. The one trade-off is that this added text cannot be selected or found with search, although the original text of the document still can.

Choosing where it goes

Pick left, centre or right alignment and a text size between 6 and 36 points; 9 to 11 points looks like a normal printed header. The text sits about 8 millimetres from the top and bottom edges. If a line is longer than the page is wide, it is made smaller to fit instead of being cut off. You can limit the header and footer to certain pages by typing a range such as 2-10, and you can skip the first page so a cover or title page stays clean. Pages that are turned sideways get their text along the edge you see when you read the page.

Header, footer or watermark?

A header and footer sit quietly at the edges of the page and suit names, titles, dates and numbers that should not get in the way of reading. A watermark is large text across the middle of the page, such as "Only for KYC", meant to stop a copy from being reused for something else. If you need both, add the header and footer here first and then the watermark with PDF watermark, so each tool works on a clean page.

Where people use it

Students add their name, roll number and subject to every page of an assignment before submitting it. Offices mark reports with the company name and "Internal use only". Lawyers and clerks add a case number and date to each page of a bundle. Anyone merging several PDFs into one file can add a single running footer afterwards, so the combined document looks like one piece of work.

Check the preview before you download

Some documents print text right up to the edge of the page. In that case the header or footer can sit on top of existing content, because this tool adds text and does not move what is already there. Look at the preview of the first and last pages; if anything overlaps, choose a smaller size or keep the header and footer short.

Your PDF is edited inside your browser on your phone or computer. Nothing is uploaded, so contracts, exam papers and business reports stay with you. There is no account, no watermark of ours and no limit on pages or files.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add page numbers in the footer?
Type "Page {page} of {total}" in the footer box, which is the default. For numbers only, type {page}. If you only need numbers, the Add page numbers tool offers ready-made styles.
Can I add a different header to different pages?
Run the tool once for each set of pages. Type the first range, such as 1-5, and download, then open the result and add the next header to pages 6-10.
Why can I not select the header text in my PDF?
The header and footer are added as a sharp picture of the text so every language prints correctly. The original text of your document can still be selected and searched.
Will the header cover my existing text?
Only if your document already uses the very top or bottom of the page. Check the preview, and use a smaller size or a shorter line if anything overlaps.
Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?
No. PDFPixo runs in your browser, so the PDF is read and saved on your own device and nobody else sees it.
