Remove Blank Pages

Find and delete empty pages in a scanned PDF automatically.

Delete the empty pages that scanners leave in a PDF without looking through every page yourself.

Delete the empty pages a scanner leaves behind

Office scanners and phone apps often add empty pages: the back of single-sided papers scanned in duplex mode, a sheet that went through twice, or a separator page. In a long file these blank pages make reading slow, waste paper when printing and push the file over upload limits. This tool looks at every page, finds the ones that are empty and makes a new PDF without them, in one step.

How a blank page is found

First the tool checks whether a page has any text. A page with even one word of real text is never removed. For pages without text, it draws a small picture of the page and counts how many dark pixels there are, ignoring a thin frame around the edge where scanners often leave a grey line or punch holes. If almost nothing is dark, the page counts as blank.

How strict to be

'Only fully white pages' removes only pages with practically nothing on them. 'Normal' also removes pages with a few specks of dust or a faint scanner line, and suits most scans. 'Also pages with faint marks' goes further, for pages where the back side shows through the paper. Pictures, stamps and drawings count as content, so a page with a photo or a signature is kept.

What you see afterwards

A message lists the page numbers that were removed, for example '2 blank pages removed: 2, 4', so you can check them. If no blank page is found, the tool tells you so and makes no new file. If every page looks blank, nothing is removed, so you never get an empty PDF.

Check before deleting the original

Faint pencil notes or very light stamps may look blank to the tool. Keep the original until you have looked through the new file. If one page was removed by mistake, run the tool again with 'Only fully white pages'.

An example

A clerk scans a 30-page file in duplex mode. Half the backs are empty, so the PDF has 54 pages. The tool removes 24 blank pages, the file becomes much easier to read and smaller to upload.

Good to know

Pages keep their original quality, because the remaining pages are copied as they are. Only pages are removed; nothing on the other pages changes. If you want to delete pages by hand instead, or remove pages that are not blank, use Organize PDF, where you can see every page and remove any of them.

Private by design

Everything happens inside your own browser. Your files and the details you type are never uploaded to a server, and nothing is kept after you close the page. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit. For contracts, bank papers and personal photos this matters more than anything else.

How to use it

  1. Choose the PDF Pick the scanned PDF.
  2. Choose how strict Normal suits most scans.
  3. Press the button Blank pages are found and removed.
  4. Check and download Read the list of removed pages and save.
