Edit PDF Text

This page opens the PDF Studio editor ready for one job: changing words that are already printed inside a PDF. You do not need the original Word file. Open the PDF, tap the line that is wrong, type the correct words and download the corrected PDF. Everything happens inside your browser, so the document is never uploaded to any server.

When you need to change text in a PDF

People often receive a PDF that is almost right: a certificate draft with a misspelt name, a quotation with an old price, a letter with the wrong date, a price list with a changed phone number, or a form where one line has to be updated. Asking the sender to make a new file takes time, and printing, correcting by hand and scanning again looks untidy. Editing the words directly in the PDF is quicker and the result looks like the original document.

How to change a word or a line

Open your PDF and choose ‘Edit words’ in the toolbar. Tap the word or line you want to change; a box opens with the current text. Type the new text and press ‘Replace’. The old words are removed from the page, not just covered with a white patch, and the new words are written in their place. You can change as many lines as you need on any page, use Undo and Redo to try changes safely, and download the finished PDF when you are happy.

Fonts, size and alignment

The editor first tries to use the font that is already inside the PDF, at the same size, so the new words blend in. PDF files usually keep only the letters they actually use. If a letter you type is missing from that font, the closest standard font in the same style is used instead, and a short message names it. You can also choose Helvetica, Times or Courier yourself, set the size and the alignment, and decide whether a longer line should shrink to fit or stop with a warning. For an exact match you can upload the TTF file of the original font. Hindi and other Devanagari text is written with a Devanagari font that comes with the site.

What can and cannot be edited

Only real text can be changed. A scanned PDF or a photo of a page is a picture, so its words are not text; use the OCR tool to read such a page, or retype the part you need. Some PDFs store hidden alternative text behind what you see; where the editor cannot remove that safely it refuses the change instead of making a broken file. Locked PDFs have to be unlocked with their password first. If the PDF carries a digital signature, the editor warns you that editing may make that signature invalid. Paragraphs do not flow onto the next line or page by themselves, so keep a replacement about as long as the original words.

More than text

The same editor can replace a picture inside the PDF, add new text boxes, a signature or a pen drawing, highlight lines, add comments and links, fill form fields, rotate or delete pages and black out private details. All of this is available from the toolbar on this page, so you can finish all corrections in one place.

Private and free

The PDF is opened and edited by an engine that runs inside your browser (MuPDF, open source under the AGPL-3.0 licence). Your document is not uploaded, nobody else sees it, and nothing is kept after you close the page. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on the number of files. The first time, the editor takes a few seconds to load; after that it opens quickly.

Can I edit the text of a PDF for free?
Yes. Open the PDF, choose ‘Edit words’, tap the text, type the correction and press ‘Replace’. There is no charge and no watermark.
Will the new text look like the old text?
The editor uses the font of the PDF when it can. If a letter is missing from that font, the closest standard font is used and a message tells you. You can also upload the original TTF font.
Can I change Hindi text in a PDF?
Yes, when the Hindi in the PDF is real text. New Hindi words are written with a Devanagari font automatically.
Why can I not edit my scanned PDF?
A scanned page is a picture, not text. Use OCR to read it or retype the part you need.
Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?
No. The editing happens inside your browser, and the file stays on your device.
