Photo and Signature Size for SSC, IBPS, NEET and Other Forms

Updated: 2026-10-18

Almost every government job or exam form in India asks you to upload a photograph and a signature in a fixed size, such as 20 to 50 KB for the photo and 10 to 20 KB for the signature. If the file is even a little too big or too small, the form refuses it. This guide explains what those numbers mean, the sizes commonly asked for, and how to prepare both files on a phone in a few minutes.

Pixels and KB are two different things

Pixels describe how wide and tall the picture is, for example 200 × 230. KB describes how heavy the file is. A form may check both. A photo can have the right pixels and still be too heavy, or the right KB and the wrong shape. That is why simply cropping or compressing once often fails.

Centimetres in a notice, such as 3.5 cm × 4.5 cm, describe the shape of a printed photo. On a screen they are turned into pixels, so most forms list both.

Sizes commonly asked for

IBPS bank exams (PO, Clerk, RRB) have for years used a photograph of about 200 × 230 pixels between 20 and 50 KB, a signature of about 140 × 60 pixels between 10 and 20 KB, a left thumb impression and a handwritten declaration. Recent IBPS forms also take a live photograph with the camera during registration, in addition to the uploaded photo.

SSC forms now capture the photograph live through the camera while you fill the form, instead of asking you to upload one. The signature is still uploaded, usually as a JPG between 10 and 20 KB.

NEET UG asks for a passport-size photo and a postcard-size photo (each 10 to 200 KB in recent years), a signature of about 4 to 30 KB and thumb impressions.

These numbers change from year to year. Always read the photo and signature section of your own notification before preparing the files, and treat the sizes above as examples only.

How to prepare the photo

Use a recent photo with your face looking straight at the camera, a plain light background and even light. Open the exam photo tool on PDFPixo, choose your exam from the list or type the width, height and KB limit from your notice, and press the button. The tool crops the photo from the centre to the right shape, sets the pixels and brings the file inside the KB range, so keep your face in the middle of the photo.

If your form wants your name and the date printed below the photo, turn that option on; the tool adds a neat strip with both.

How to prepare the signature

Sign with a black or dark blue pen on plain white paper, inside a box about twice as wide as it is tall. Take a sharp photo in daylight, from straight above. Crop the photo close around the signature first, with the photo editor or by taking the photo close up. Then open the signature tool, choose your exam or type the size, and the tool fits the signature to that shape and brings the file to the right KB.

Do not sign in capital letters if the notice asks for running handwriting, and keep the same style you will use in the exam hall.

Common reasons uploads are rejected

The file is above the maximum KB or below the minimum KB. The picture is the wrong shape and gets stretched. The photo is too dark, blurred, or taken with a cap or dark glasses. The background is busy. The signature is too faint or has lines from ruled paper. The format is PNG when the form asks for JPG.

After preparing, open the downloaded files once and check the size shown under each one before you upload.

A worked example

Suppose a bank exam notice asks for a photo of 200 × 230 pixels between 20 and 50 KB, and a signature of 140 × 60 pixels between 10 and 20 KB. You take a photo against a white wall and get a 3 MB, 3000 × 4000 picture. In the exam photo tool you choose the bank exam preset, which fills 200, 230 and the KB range. The tool crops the photo from the centre to the 200 × 230 shape and saves it at, for example, 38 KB. For the signature you photograph your signature close up on white paper, choose the same preset in the signature tool, and get a 140 × 60 file of about 15 KB. Both are ready to upload.

When the form keeps rejecting the file

Read the exact error message. "File size too large" means you need a lower KB value; "file size too small" means the minimum is not met — a very plain photo or signature can become too small; when you choose an exam from the list, the tool keeps the file above the minimum for that exam. "Invalid dimensions" means the pixels are wrong. "Invalid format" usually means PNG instead of JPG. If the form shows no message, try another browser, because some portals work badly on certain mobile browsers.

Your photos stay on your phone

PDFPixo prepares the photo and signature inside your browser. Nothing is uploaded to our server, so your face and signature are not stored anywhere except your own phone.

Frequently asked questions

What is the size of a passport photo in pixels for forms?
There is no single size; many bank forms use about 200 × 230 pixels. Always use the size written in your notification.
How do I reduce a signature to 10–20 KB?
Use the signature tool, choose your exam or type 10 and 20 as the KB range, and download.
Can I use a selfie?
It is better not to. Selfies distort the face and are often too close. Ask someone to take the photo at eye level.
Does the photo need a white background?
Most forms ask for a plain light or white background. Check your notice; the background tool can make it white.
Is it safe to make these files online?
On PDFPixo the files are made inside your browser and are not uploaded.
