How to Make Passport Size Photos at Home and Print Them on 4×6

Updated: 2026-10-18

A photo studio charges for a few passport-size photos, but with a phone and a nearby print shop you can get a full sheet for the price of one 4×6 print. Here is how to make it look neat and acceptable.

Take the photo

Stand in front of a plain light wall, about an arm and a half from the phone. Face the camera straight, eyes open, mouth closed, without a cap or dark glasses. Use daylight from the front so there are no strong shadows on the face or the wall. Ask someone else to take it at eye level instead of a selfie, which distorts the face.

Make the background clean

If the wall is not perfectly plain, open the remove background tool and choose White. Check the edges of the hair by zooming in.

Make the sheet

Open the passport photo sheet tool and choose the size. 35 × 45 mm is the common Indian size; other sizes are in the list. Choose 4×6 inch photo paper or A4, set the number of copies, and turn on cut lines so cutting is easy. Download the sheet as a picture or PDF.

Print it right

Take the file to a photo print shop or print on photo paper at home. Ask for "actual size" or 100 percent, not "fit to page", otherwise the photos shrink. Cut along the lines with a sharp blade and a ruler.

Official rules come first

Passport, visa and some exam offices have their own rules about background colour, face size and recent date, and some take the photo themselves. Read the rules of the office where you will use the photo. For online forms that want a digital photo in KB, use the exam photo tool instead of a printed sheet.

How many photos fit on one sheet

A 4×6 inch photo paper fits several 35 × 45 mm photos with cut lines between them, and an A4 sheet fits many more. You choose the number of copies, and the tool arranges them on the paper with cut lines. Printing one 4×6 sheet at a photo shop usually costs much less than a set of studio prints, and you can print again whenever you need more.

Checking the photo before printing

Zoom in on the face: it should be sharp, evenly lit and looking straight ahead. The top of the head and the chin should both be inside the photo, with a little space above the head. The background should be plain without shadows. If any of these is wrong, take the photo again rather than printing a poor sheet.

Digital photo or printed sheet?

Online forms almost always want a digital photo file with a pixel size and a KB limit, not a printed sheet. For those, use the exam photo tool, which crops the photo to the right shape and keeps it within the KB range. Printed passport photos are for paper forms, ID cards, school and office records, and some visa or passport offices that do not take the photo themselves. Making both from the same good original photo keeps your look consistent across documents. Save the original full-size photo; it is the best starting point for every future size, and photos taken again later may look different from those in earlier records.
